Stop Chasing Someone Else's Swing | TPI Golf Fitness

When I became a TPI certified golf fitness coach, the biggest thing I took away wasn't a drill or a gadget. TPI, the Titleist Performance Institute, is an organization that studies how the body moves and how physical limitations shape performance. It started in golf, but the principles apply to anyone who trains. The big idea is simple: there isn't one right way to move. There's one efficient way for your body.

That changed how I coach, and it applies whether you play golf or not.

The Imitation Problem

Almost everyone has tried to copy someone else at some point. A golfer watches a tour pro and tries to match their backswing. A lifter sees a perfect deep squat online and wonders why theirs looks different. A runner reads about the ideal stride and tries to force it.

The problem is that you're copying a result without having the same range of motion or mobility that produces it. That pro has the hip mobility, thoracic rotation, and stability to make that move look easy. If you don't have the same range of motion, your body finds the movement somewhere else. It might be your lower back, your knees, or your shoulders. That's where compensations, plateaus, and eventually aches and pains come from.

What Is a TPI Screen?

The TPI screen is a series of simple movement checks: balance, hip rotation, shoulder mobility, how you rotate your torso, how you squat with your arms overhead. It isn't a pass/fail fitness test. It's a way to see how your body moves today, and which limitations are most likely to show up in your swing, your lifts, or your daily life.

Two golfers can have completely different swings and both be efficient, because each is working with what their body can do. The goal was never to look like someone else. It's to move as efficiently as possible within your own range of motion.

It's Not Just a Golf Thing

I've seen the same pattern outside the golf course:

  • The lifter who can't reach depth in a squat without their lower back rounding. The fix usually isn't "try harder." It's working on ankle or hip mobility so the position becomes available.

  • The desk worker with a stiff upper back who gets sore shoulders from overhead pressing. The limitation is in the thoracic spine, not the shoulder.

  • The weekend runner who can't stabilize on one leg and loses control with every stride.

Different goals, same principle. Find the limitation, then train it.

Then We Train

The good news is that most of these limits are very trainable. Once we know what's holding you back, the plan is straightforward:

  1. Prioritize. We pick the few limitations that matter most instead of trying to fix everything at once.

  2. Build mobility where you're restricted and stability where you can't control the range you have.

  3. Retest. We come back to the same screens in a few weeks and see what's changed.

The Bottom Line

You can't borrow someone else's body, and you don't need to. The golfer who stops forcing a swing that doesn't fit, the lifter who earns their depth instead of faking it, and the desk worker who finally gets their shoulders moving well all have the same thing in common: they stopped copying and started training.

Your range of motion isn't a fixed limit. It's a starting point. Every session in the gym is a chance to expand it, and as it grows, so do your options: a freer swing, a stronger lift, a body that keeps moving well for decades instead of just this season.

Stop chasing someone else's movement. Build your own.
